Please note that the kick-off workshop in Module 1 cannot be booked individually. Requirement for participation in the kick-off workshop is the registration for the entire Module 1 in English.

Modul 1 in English - Basic Teaching Qualification in Higher Education

Target group:

M1 in English addresses lecturers in higher education who have no or only a prior knowledge of higher education didactics and who ... - already use or planning to use English as a medium of instruction in their lectures. - have an international background and who are going to give lectures at an university in Saxony for at least two semesters.

Learning objectives:

After active participation lecturers are able to:

  • describe the shift from teaching to learning and derive corresponding options for their own teaching practice.
  • reflect on their own role as a lecturer and their teaching practice.
  • perceive teaching-learning situations in a differentiated way, to plan and design student-centered and goal-oriented lectures.
  • use didactical basics as the starting point of their teaching planning.
  • communicate with others in a qualified and goal-oriented way about teaching.
  • know about the diverse settings of university teaching and diversity of students.
  • apply lecture techniques and strategies in English as medium of instruction. 


Semester accompanying module consists of presence workshops, online tasks and practice phase.

  • lena Buck has a background in political science. An experienced facilitator with a focus on social justice and diversity, she worked at HDS for six years, during which time she co-led Module 1 seven times. Elena currently coordinates the Diversity Research Institute at the University of Göttingen. She is bilingual (English/German) and passionate about teaching, learning and understanding.
  • arola Kunkel has studied educational and political science. She has been working as a trainer, facilitator and advisor in NGO and academic contexts since 2001, with special attention on inter-/transculturality, global learning, group and team dynamics as well as conflict transformation. As a member of HDS in 2012-13, she was responsible for the overall coordination of the course program
